Terminology
There are a few key differences in the feature set and terms used to describe capabilities.
Plan: In HackerRank you "Plan" the hiring process upfront by selecting a role (e.g. front-end developer) which then generates your assessments. Within Coderbyte, you first select which assessment feature you want to use and then select (and customize) the corresponding template per role.
Screen: Both Coderbyte and HackerRank offer a screening capability with code challenges and automated grading. In HackerRank, this is called a "Screen" while in Coderbyte it is called Assessment.
Questions: In HackerRank, you select questions to test for different skills. In Coderbyte, these are called Challenges. When editing an Assessment, you can add/remove challenges, change which coding languages can be used, and add multiple choice and open-ended questions. Customization
Beyond differences in terminology, there are also differences in how to best use Coderbyte.
Custom coding challenges: HackerRank encourages companies to create custom coding questions. While companies think this is an effective way to mitigate cheating and customize their assessment process, most of these questions will be flawed and biased. Creating legible and unbiased challenges is a very tedious process that requires expertise and years of iteration.
On Coderbyte, you can create custom challenges but they will go through an expert review (at no additional cost) that can take up to 48 hours. This is to ensure that your challenge can be solved and that candidates have a positive experience. Before we instituted the review, more than 50% of custom challenges suffered from problems that inhibited the candidate experience.
